Lewandowski’s Brace Sinks Frankfurt, Bayern 3-0 Frankfurt

Robert Lewandowski’s and Thomas Muller’s goals helped injury-depleted Bayern Munich maintain their lead at the top of the Bundesliga standings.<--More--!> The former Borussia Dortmund striker struck in either half to take his tally for the season to 16, before Muller’s late strike sealed victory for the hosts. Pep Guardiola had described his team’s injury situation as “very critical,” having to name only four substitutes for the match without the services of Bastian Schweinsteiger, Arjen Robben, Frank Ribery, David Alaba and Mehdi Benatia among others. And with a Uefa Champions League last-8 first leg tie away to FC Porto just by the corner, the former Barcelona coach tweaked his starting lineup, with four players of Spanish origin in Juan Bernat, Pepe Reina, Xabi Alonso and Thiago Alcantara starting a Bundesliga game; blazing a trail for others to follow in the history of the German top flight. The visitors sat deep in their own half, but that did not stop Bayern form assuming ascendancy with their first attack after 15 minutes as Muller laid the ball off for Lewandowski, who flicked it over his marker inside the area and smashed a sublime volley beyond goalkeeper Kevin Trapp into the top corner. Trapp twice denied the Polish striker- the second a superb save from close range- while at the other end Reina had to remain at alert, despite being a spectator for most of the opening period, to save off the feet of Sonny Kittel in a one-on-one situation.

Frankfurt came pouring out of their hiding place in the second half, but their forward play posed little trouble for Bayern in the attacking third. Bayern themselves were having difficulty putting the game to bed, with Gotze drilling his shot against the base of the upright after a mazy run into Frankfurt area. Lewandowski headed in Bayern’s second goal off a rebound of Gotze’s goal-bound shot, which was hacked high off the line by Makoto Hasebe for the striker to complete his brace. Muller completed scores late on, curling home from an acute angle from a Mitchell Weiser assist. Elsewhere, Borussia Monchengladbach beat Dortmund 3-1 via goals from Oscar Wendt, Raffael and Havard Nordveit, with Ilkay Gundogan grabbing a consolation for the visitors.

According to Fani-Kayode, APC Believes It Owns Lagos And The People In It

The Director, Media and Publicity of the Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Organisation, PDPPCO, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, has responded to allegations by the All Progressives Congress that President Goodluck Jonathan was planning to rig today’s governorship election in Lagos State in favour of the PDP flag bearer, Mr. Jimi Agbaje.<--More--!> According to Fani-Kayode, the APC was in panic mode “because it knows that Agbaje is going to win the election”. The PDPPCO spokesman, in a statement issued on Friday in Abuja, said this was the first time in 16 years that the APC together with the opposition tendencies it represents was facing a formidable challenge from a governorship candidate of the PDP. He said, “It is not true that the President has any rigging plan for Lagos and neither do we need any such plan because our party is strong there. “The problem with the APC and why it makes such allegation is because the party believes that it owns Lagos State and all those that live there. “The party is now in a state of panic because for the first time in 16 years it is facing a formidable challenge and the party knows that Agbaje is likely to win. “The truth is that there was no secret meeting in which rigging was planned by the President and neither is it true that materials were smuggled in to rig election in Lagos State”. He alleged that the only people that were interested in rigging were members of APC, warning however that such action would be resisted. Fani-Kayode said the fact that Jonathan conceded defeat in the March 28 presidential election did not mean that the President and the PDP had lost their nerves. He said, “Jonathan conceded defeat and congratulated the APC presidential candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, though there were many question marks about the card readers, the role of the Independent National Electoral Commission and the so-called votes that APC allegedly won in Kano, Katsina, Jigawa, Kaduna states. “The figures for the APC were inflated in those states while the votes that Jonathan scored were purposely suppressed and reduced in places like Abia and other parts of the South-East by INEC. This is the bitter truth even though many people are reluctant to admit it”.

The former president, however, praised Nigerians, saying they should be proud of their electoral performance. “We have done it for West Africa; we have done it for Africa and we have now done it for ourselves. “Nigerians can now raise their heads in honour anywhere because there are evidences that our democracy is fast maturing”, he said.
