Illegal Bunkering: Nigeria Navy Destroys 20 Wooden Boats, 2 Barges In Rivers

The Nigeria Navy Shipyard Pathfinder (NNS Pathfinder) in Rivers State has again made good its promise to come down hard on illegal bunkerers and other sea robbers.

The base captured over 20 wooden boats and two barges containing about 100 litres of substances suspected to be crude oil products.

It also uncovered channels through which the bunkerers lay their pipes to siphon petroleum products in Bodo and Bolo creeks in the state.

In an operation that required the use of fire arms and inflammable substances, gun boats were on patrol to ward off any possible attacks from militants.

The Head of Operations, NNS pathfinder in Rivers State, Usman Yahaya, told Channels Television that the operation is a regular exercise. According to him, the environmental impact of their activities are unavoidable.

While the Nigeria Navy continues to fight illegal maritime activities, the waste of resources and impact on the environment remain issues of concern.
