The group stated this at a news conference jointly addressed by its Coordinators, Oby Ezekwesili and Hadiza Bala-Usman, on a special one week programme tagged, “Global week of action to commemorate the one-year of the girls’ abduction.”
Ezekwesili, who read the text of the prepared speech on behalf of the group, described the missing girls as the symbol for the defence of the dignity and sanctity of human life; of the girl child, and women.
She said, “They represent all those being oppressed, repressed, disadvantaged, hurting, and unsafe persons everywhere. We must all prioritise their safe return.”
The Co-coordinator, who expressed optimism that the girls are still alive and would be reunited with their families, said the week long activities was aimed at further drawing global attention to their predicament since last year.
The programme, which has as its theme, “364 Days On, Chibok Girls – Never To Be Forgotten,” started on Wednesday and would end on Tuesday next week with a diversity of activities like a walkathlon, Special Juma’at prayer in mosques nationwide, and Prayer at the Unity Fountain.
She added that the Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, Cardinal John Onaiyekan, would deliver a commendation lecture next week Monday in the FCT, and that the event would be preceeded by a candle light vigil, among many other events.
