Champions League A-D: Liverpool Suffer Real Defeat

Reigning world footballer of the year Cristiano Ronaldo scored his first goal at Anfield as Real Madrid claimed a first victory over Liverpool in a group game of the Uefa Champions League on Wednesday.

Ronaldo and France striker Karim Benzema helped the reigning European champions claim a historic win over Liverpool, with the Portuguese superstar also edging a strike closer to equaling Raul Gonzalez’s record for most Champions League goals.

German club Borussia Dortmund continued their perfect start to the European Cup campaign as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s brace inspired a 4-0 thrashing of Galatasaray in Istanbul.

    Group A

Atletico Madrid 5-0 Malmo Second-half strikes from Koke, Croatian international Mario Mandzukic, French winger Antoine Griezman, captain Diego Godin and substitute Alessio Cerci helped Atletico maintain their push for a last 16 berth with an emphatic win over Swedish champions Malmo.

Diego Simeone’s side are tied on 67 points with leaders Olympiakos but trail the Greek champions on head-to-head bases.

Olympiacos 1-0 Juventus Olympiakos midfielder Patjim Kasami’s strike six minutes past the half-hour mark separated both sides at the Karaiskakis Stadium.

The former Palermo stalwart converted a great counter-attacking move to help Michel’s remain at the top of the standings, mainly as a result of their Match Day 1 home win over La Liga champions Atletico, who enjoys a better goal advantage.

    Group B

Ludogorets 1-0 Basel Ludogorets Razgrad secured the first ever point by a Bulgarian side in a Champions League game courtesy of defender Yordan Minev’s injury-time strike as they earned their fair share of revenge against Swiss champions Basel.

The minnows lost 6-2 on aggregate to Basel in the play-off round the previous term and after Geoffroy Serey Die saw red for a challenge on Cosmin Moti the numerical advantage favoured the Natsionalen Stadion Vasil Levski hosts as the half wore on.

It look like it was never going to happen until the second minute of injury time, when full-back Minev drilled home a shot from 20 metres past goalkeeper Vaclík to place Paulo Sousa’s men on level points with Liverpool and Basel, better still in second position.

Liverpool 0-3 Real Madrid Brendan Rodgers’ ‘Reds’ equalled their worst Champions League home defeat in history on Wednesday as there were no to be any fairytale comeback as was in the 2005 Istanbul final.

Ronaldo increased his Champions League tally to 70 in the 23rd minute, thumping home an unstoppable shot from 15 yards.

The goal which was the winger’s 20th of the 2014-15 campaign means he has now scored three more goals than the entire Liverpool team and is one away from tying former Real striker Raul in record for most Champions League goals.

Benzema’s brace completed the win, the Frenchman; first beating Simon Mignolet to a Toni Kroos floated delivery and heading home from a tight angle on the half-hour mark, before capitalising on a poor Liverpool defending to blast home a loose ball from close range.

Liverpool trail Ludogorets and Real Madrid in third, same points as the Bulgarians and fourth-placed Basel.

    Group C

Monaco 0-0 Benfica Monaco secured a second successive goalless draw in a matter of three weeks as Benfica earned their first point in this season’s European campaign.

The principality club though maintained their unbeaten record in Europe but relinquished the top of the group to German Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen, whom they beat 1-0 on Match Day 1.

Coach Leonardo Jardim’s men are now second while Benfica remain bottom of the table.

Second-half strikes from defenders Giulio Donati and Kryiakos Papadopoulos guided Leverkusen past Zenit at the Bay Arena.

Both sides went into the interval with the contest deadlocked but the hosts needed just five minutes to secure their second successive win of the championship.

Italian defender Donati broke the deadlock on 58 minutes, when he fired a superb shot from long range into the far corner after being picked out by Turkish midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu.

On loan Schalke centre-back then got on the end of a free-kick to steer his header home three minutes after the hour mark.

Leverkusen top the group with six points while Andre-Villas Boas’ Zenit are third on four points.

    Group D

Anderlecht 1-2 Arsenal Manager Arsene Wenger was worthy of a birthday present as he turned 65 on Wednesday and the ‘Gunners’ left it late for the French boss in Brussels.

Andy Najar thumped home a great header on 71 minutes to place the Belgian hosts in the ascendancy, but two quick-fire goals by Kieran Gibbs and Lukas Podolski salvaged the night for the London visitors. Arsenal look well in sight of a round of 16 progress as they presently sit second on six points, three adrift of leaders Borussia Dortmund.

Galatasaray 0-4 Borussia Dortmund Aubameyang, Marco Reus and Andre Ramos all got among the goals as Borussia Dortmund rounded off an all Bundesliga club match day success with an impressive win over Galatasaray.

Gabonese Aubameyang opened scores in the 7th minute, sweeping in Reus’ precise cross and doubled the visitors’ advantage just after a quarter of an hour of play. Reus added Dortmund’s third with a stunning long-range strike and Ramos grabbed his third Champions League goal in three matches since signing from Hertha Berlin, firing home after less than a minute on the pitch in the 83rd minute.
