Broken-down vehicles endanger road users in Aba

Abaroad users in Abia State are going through pains occasioned by indiscriminate parking of broken down vehicles on busy roads.

This was even as a young driver of a Toyota Jeep was feared dead in the commercial hub of the state, after his vehicle rammed into a broken down truck at Bata Junction on the ever busy Factory Road in the city.

South East Voice had on its February 18, 2015 edition warned about the dangers posed by broken down trucks on various roads in Aba where these trucks are allowed to stay as many as two weeks on the roads, causing gridlock without the FRSC or police traffic personnel towing them away.

The injured driver, who was said to be the owner of a leading fast food restaurant in Aba, was cruising home at about 9 pm when he crashed ran into the stationary truck.

When South East Voice visited the scene of the incident, sympathizers were seen discussing the situation.

Eyewitnesses told South East Voice that the driver was still in coma as he was rushed to an undisclosed hospital at Abayi, along Aba – Owerri road by some good Samaritans.

However, some of sympathizers who spoke on the issue blamed the accident on the failure of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, and police to tow the truck away, adding that if they had been alive to their responsibilities, the accident would have been averted.

“This broken down truck has been abandoned here for some days now.

Look at the distance of the truck from the junction where police traffic wardens and FRSC personnel direct traffic.

‘If they had been alive to their responsibilities, they would have seen to it that the truck was towed away from the road and this accident could have been avoided.

’Broken-down trucks are allowed to stay on the road; sometimes for one or two weeks without caution signs to other road users.

These broken down vehicles cause traffic gridlocks without the FRSC and police personnel caring to tow them away,” one of them who gave his name as Okechukwu told South East Voice.

In a telephone interview with South East Voice, the Assistant Route Commander, FRSC, Aba Unit, Joshua Igwe attributed the cause of accident to over speeding by the driver.

“There was a caution sign left on the road by the truck driver which other vehicles had smashed. If the man wasn’t on a high speed, he would have noticed that the truck was stationary,” he said.
